1. What Makes a Good Surf Photo?

From my perspective a good surf photo consists of 5 basic elements.

Light:
Time of day, direction the light is originating from, the angle from which the photo is taken, atmospheric conditions (clouds, deep blue sky, etc).

Early morning light is the best light for sharp, clear photos. Generally speaking the midday light is undesirable – it is too harsh to take really pleasing images. My favorite light is evening light which tends to backlight the surfer creating a silhouette effect. The surfer usually will be seen in the image as a shadow (in the most extreme) or various stages of clarity depending on the light and water conditions. Using the wave as a reflector lamp can make for spectacular images when the light is right!

If there is fog, haze or low light in general the image will not be as pleasing as an image shot in good light. In my opinion, light is the most important factor!

The Wave:
The type of swell, tide and wind conditions. Large waves, small waves, hollow, mushy and so on. Excellent photos can be shot in all wave conditions (unlike light conditions). Some of my favorite photos are of small waves. I can see and capture the beauty of these waves and the creativity of the surfers who ride them.

The Surfer:
Or more importantly, what the surfer is doing on the wave. The essence of what the surfer is trying to create or express through his or her surfing. While it is easy to get a good picture of a professional surfer, all surfers have moments on the wave that display a certain pleasing style or maneuver. I believe I can get an excellent photo of any surfer! At least most of the time.

Photographic technique:
Timing is the most important task the photographer must master. Then, framing the wave and the surfer in an aesthetically pleasing way. Of course the camera’s controls must be set correctly for the camera to operate under the light conditions and to achieve the desired effects.

Equipment:
While lighting is the primary element, using quality photographic equipment is also important to obtain the best results.

2. Why do the Photos look good on the screen, but incredibly sharp when printed?

Not sure why right now, but most of you have seen your sample photos printed. That is how all my photos will look once printed.
